Cognitively adequate modelling of spatial reference in human-robot interaction
نویسندگان
چکیده
The question addressed in this paper is which types of spatial reference human users employ in the interaction with a robot and how a cognitively adequat model of these strategies can be implemented. Experiments in human-robot interaction were carried out which show how human users approach an artificial communication partner which was designed on the basis of empirical findings regarding spatial references among humans. Results are considerable differences in the strategies speakers employ to achieve spatial reference in human-robot interaction and in natural communication. This work was supported partly by the Spatial Inference project of the DFG priority program on Spatial Cognition, under grant Fr 806/7-2 for Christian Freksa and partly by the BMBF under grant number 01 IV 701 F7.

Affordance-Based Human-Robot Interaction
In our targeted scenario, humans can flexibly establish joint object reference with a robot entirely on the basis of their own intuitions. To reach this aim, the robot needs to be equipped with the kind of knowledge that can be matched in a cognitively adequate way to users’ intuitive conceptual and linguistic preferences. Such an endeavour requires knowledge about human spatial object referenc...
متن کاملMultimodal Shared-Control Interaction for Mobile Robots in AAL Environments
This dissertation investigates the design, development and implementation of cognitively adequate, safe and robust, spatially-related, multimodal interaction between human operators and mobile robots in Ambient Assisted Living environments both from the theoretical and practical perspectives. By focusing on different aspects of the concept Interaction, the essential contribution of this dissert...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study on Blinking and Eye Movement Detection via EEG Signals for Human-Robot Interaction Purposes Based on a Spherical 2-DOF Parallel Robot
Blinking and eye movement are one of the most important abilities that most people have, even people with spinal cord problem. By using this ability these people could handle some of their activities such as moving their wheelchair without the help of others. One of the most important fields in Human-Robot Interaction is the development of artificial limbs working with brain signals. The purpos...
متن کاملTowards Cognitively Adequate Interaction for Mental Model-Based Spatio-Temporal Assistance
This paper presents an approach for interaction between a human user and a mental model-based spatio-temporal assistance system based on the definitions for conceptual and inferential cognitive adequacy (cf. Knauff et. al., 1995). The paper introduces work in progress that covers ideas towards a visual interaction language that provides cognitively adequate knowledge representation and interact...
متن کاملSpatial Reference in Linguistic Human-Robot Interaction: Iterative, Empirically Supported Development of a Model of Projective Relations
The aim of our research is to enable spontaneous and efficient spatial reference to objects in human-robot interaction situations. This paper presents the iterative, empirically based design of a robotic system that uses a computational model for identifying objects on the basis of a range of spatial reference systems. The efficiency of the system is evaluated by two successive empirical studie...
